Q. Is recording phone conversations legal?
A. In most places in the world the answer is simply yes, as long as you own the pc and phone line. Please check your local laws.

Q. Is Modem Spy software detectable?
A. Generally no. There is a stealth mode option, which makes it virtually undetectable. However, there are some "anti-spyware" programs that can detect this software.

Q. I have a xxxxxxxx type modem, will this work? Depends.
A. It works on almost every known voice and dailup modem in existance. DSL or cable won't work.

Q. What versions of Windows does this run on?
A. All, but NOT Windows NT!

Q. Program does not work at all, please advise.
A. You should upgrade modem driver. If you are running Windows 95, you will need to upgrade Unimodem/V driver Modem Spy will not work on Windows NT (Q193138)

Q.I know my modem is voice, but ModemSpy keeps saying it does not support voice features.
A.You still must upgrade modem driver. Contact modem manufacturer for assistance, if needed.

Q.But other programs work just fine! I can send/receive faxes, connect to the Internet, but your program does not work.
A.Most problems with Modem Spy are because of driver. Program uses modem driver to access modem's voice features. Old drivers (or incorrectly installed new drivers) allow program to use data/fax features of modem, but not voice. So, in order to get Modem Spy working, you should upgrade modem driver. ModemSpy works with voice modems only (with few exceptions). ModemSpy does not work on Cable modems. Q. Modem Spy records incoming calls automatically, but does not record outbound calls.
A. Modem Spy v2.4 and higher: Select File / Preferences menu item, select Hardware tab, press Setup button and disable dialtone waiting for your modem.

Q. What modem would you recommend to buy in order to get the best results?
A. Program will work with any voice modem as well as with any TAPI compatible hardware. We do not recommend the following modems: Smartlink modems (another name - AMR or HAMR modem) due to several bugs in the driver. Motorolla modems (SM56 etc) - we have received several complains about these modems. (possible driver bug). US Robotics - thsese modems have poor sound quality.

Q. There is a small click before recording. How to get rid of it?
A. Unfortunately, this is hardware problem. So, it can not be managed within software. You may try to replace your modem with another one.

Q. The recording has a lot of static. How to fix it?
A. You will need to install special filter for your modem if you are using DSL. It should come with your DSL modem.

Q. Do I need to keep computer on all the time?
A. Yes, because Modem Spy is software. It can not be run on computer that is turned off. It even can not be run without computer.

Q. How to delete Modem Spy icon from system tray area (near system clock)?
A. Go to Preferences and enable Super Spy mode. You must choose hot key combination as well. Make sure you are holding ALT anr/or CTRL keys on your keyboard. Try to use this utility.

Q. Caller ID does not work. How to fix it?
A. Make sure you have subscribed to caller ID service from your telephone company AND your modem is caller ID compatible. Contact modem manufacturer if you need assistance.

Q.I have ADSL, DSL, Cable modem. Can I use Modem Spy?
A. No. You must have regular voice modem connected to the phone line.

Q. Modem speaker is always ON when recording. How to make it silent?
A. Possible solutions: Go to Control Panel/Modem and Phone devices and disable modem speaker control. Go to Control Panel/Modem and Phone devices, then select Advanced tab and type LO in the Extra initialization field.

Q. Line In Use indicator is always ON on my telephone. How to get rid of it? Call waiting does not work when Modem Spy is recording. How to fix it?
A. Modem picks up the call before recording. That is why the Line In Use indicator will always allert that the line is in use. Also, call waiting will be disabled. IDC modem has advanced features that can be used for completely stealth recording. This modem is available in Eastern Europe only.

Q. Will Modem Spy work with my ?
A. The program works with voice modems only (with few exceptions). The author is not aware if your modem is voice. Please contact modem manufacturer for assistance if you have any doubts. Please refer to the questions above as well.

Q. The other person does not hear me when I am recording phone conversation. How to fix it?
A. You will need to plug your telephone into wall jack (not into modem).

Q. How do you record phone conversations A. You need the right adapter

Telephone adapter is plugged into both Line-In jack of the sound card, and telephone handset / headset. This brings both sides of the telephone conversation to the sound card. The audio signal is digitally recorded and saved as a standard .WAV file.

  • Voice Port
    Connect Voice Port between the base of your telephone and the handset or headset. The two attached audio cables give you audio in and out of your telephone. Connect the "From Phone" cable to the mic input on your computer sound card, connect the "To Phone" cable to the line or speaker output of your sound card.

  • Omnicron TSA-3PC The TSA-3PC is used to provide a simple and inexpensive method of connecting supervisory monitoring equipment to the handset circuit of a telephone. It is usable on most telephone styles which have a standard modular handset or headset jack and provides isolated and adjustable audio output that can be set to a weak level for use with microphone (MIC) input circuits, or the audio output can be turned up for use with Auxiliary level input circuits.Works great with PC sound cards. No external power is required.

  • Conexx Model 100
    When accuracy and record keeping are essential, the Model 100 allows conversations on virtually any analog or digital modular phone system to be recorded. This handset-interface product will connect a cassette recorder, or even the sound card in your computer, to most telephones and ensures that all sides of a conversation are recorded at equal levels.

  • TP-003
    Automatically records phone conversations with any portable cassette tape recorder with a remote control jack. This device will automatically start your tape recorder when the telephone receiver is picked up and stops the tape when it is replaced. This unit will only operate on single line phones.
